Eleventh day

So yesterday was the last day of my trip. I’ve tried to get up early, but I couldn’t really, I slept until almost 7 am. While I was packing my stuff a nice lady showed up — my friend’s mom as it turned out — she suggested a bakery and wished me a good trip back home. I love it when people have the courage to talk to a stranger or half stranger.

Then I hopped on my bike and started cycling. First of course I stopped at the bakery then I went thru Kaposvar until the first hill of the day. I chose the route 66 instead of 67 it seemed much safer, however there were more hills to climb… I know the road and I stopped before every big hill — big, just to clear that up — because the road was really steep and I needed fresh legs.

Near Sasd my GPS claimed was a cycling route. The traffic wasn’t that heavy on the highway, but I thought I would be nice if I didn’t get hit by a car, so I followed the GPS. Fist the road was fine, small street with relatively smooth asphalt, then it turned into less smooth asphalt, theen it became a dirt road with very nice loose dirt on it and theeen the road disappeared altogether. Fudge me! I went in nice and clean and came out muddy and sweaty as hell. Damn it.

I climbed a few hills till I reached Orfu. I had a nice lunch there; a nice burger with fries and lemonade — yes, I sweated so much I needed something nonalcoholic.

After lunch I hit the road. They say the most dangerous part of every trip is the first 30 km and the last 30 km — or first and last 15 minutes. This far I didn’t have any accidents I haven’t even fallen of the bike, nothing! So I knew it was coming. As it turned out “it” was a “she” Zselyke actually who was riding her bike in the left lane while watching the lake. I shouted watch out tried to stop, but it was too late. I had my first head on collision. It was interesting. It was only then when I realized how heavy my bike must be, because Zselyke bounced off me and flew at least 2 meters while I was basically just standing there. Luckily she didn’t get hurt I didn’t get hurt so we both continued our journey. Unluckily as I left Orfu I felt some water dripping… I started raining. God gave my trip the perfect framework. I set off in the rain and I finished my trip in the rain.

The last few kilometers were the hardest. I knew cycling thru Mecsek was gonna be long and hard, but I didn’t think it was gonna be this long and hard — that’s what she said. But I made it! And there was only one small part where I had to push the bike! Then I finally reached the summit and the road was all downhill from there, but my spirit was uphill — that doesn’t really work does it? Anyway I just rolled down to Pecs, took a picture with the city sign then showed my bike Tettye and her new home.

I seriously can’t believe it’s over. There were some hard moments on my trip, but when I really needed it God sent me help in different forms. Meeting Philippe was definitely a highlight of my trip, the kindness of the people when they thought I had a puncher was also a highlight, all the small talks with random strangers were amazing and if course seeing my friends my relatives were also really nice! My absolutely favorite moment when I crossed the border into Hungary. People were applauding I was crying… It was beautiful! Of course there were some moments I didn’t like usually those were the moments I had to climb a hill — haha — or when I thought I was gonna die on the road after I got used to Austrian drivers. Or when I got lost in Bakony and I had to cycle back 10 km.

Now as I look back, I see it was a wonderful trip, and yes I’m probably doing something similar next year as well.

If you were here for the stories, thank you for reading, it was also nice to see how many people were interested in my trip, if you are interested in my stats you’ll find it down below.

Thank you for all your support and see you next year!
